Piece of jewelry from 1870s and used in the First Period of Mourning. The necklace is a geometric oval Mariner link chain necklace. Each link seems to be molded vulcanite ebonite resin and has some irregularities. You can see the texture and marks of manufacture in the images and also some light wear and age damage in links. The necklace is very lightweight and has a dark brown almost black color. A nice and almost minimalist Vulcanite Ebonite jet beaded Necklace can be used in weddings, religious activities and as mourning accessory. Pretty, and unique also. This necklace is untested. The closure is a replacement from early 1900s.

Vulcanite Ebonite is a brand name for very hard rubber first obtained by Charles Goodyear by vulcanizing natural rubber for prolonged periods. For vulcanizing natural rubber, he received patent number 3633 from the United States Patent Office on June 15, 1844. Besides natural rubber, Ebonite contains about 25–80% sulfur and linseed oil. Its name comes from its intended use as an artificial substitute for ebony wood. The material is known generically as hard rubber and has formerly been called vulcanite, although that name now refers to the mineral vulcanite.
